To develop self-confidence, character building, patriotism, and a spirit of service among the youth, National Youth Day is celebrated every year on 12 January. This day is observed on the birth anniversary of the great thinker, philosopher, and social reformer Swami Vivekananda.
Reasons for Celebrating National Youth Day
Swami Vivekananda inspired the youth to become self-reliant, courageous, and aware through his thoughts and actions. His ideas continue to guide young people even today. Therefore, the Government of India decided to celebrate Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary as National Youth Day starting from the year 1984.
Life of Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata. His childhood name was Narendranath Dutta. From a young age, he was brilliant, intelligent, and curious. He accepted Ramakrishna Paramahamsa as his guru and gained spiritual knowledge under his guidance.
In 1893, his speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago brought great pride to India on the global stage. He spread the message of Vedanta and Indian culture across the world.

भारत एक युवा प्रधान देश है। देश की उन्नति और विकास में युवाओं की भूमिका अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। युवाओं में आत्मविश्वास, चरित्र निर्माण, राष्ट्रभक्ति और सेवा भावना का विकास करने हेतु प्रतिवर्ष 12 जनवरी को राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस मनाया जाता है। यह दिवस महान विचारक, दार्शनिक और समाज सुधारक स्वामी विवेकानंद की जयंती के उपलक्ष्य में मनाया जाता है।
राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस मनाने के कारण
स्वामी विवेकानंद ने अपने विचारों और कर्मों से युवाओं को आत्मनिर्भर, साहसी और जागरूक बनने की प्रेरणा दी। उनके विचार आज भी युवाओं को सही दिशा प्रदान करते हैं। इसी कारण भारत सरकार ने वर्ष 1984 से स्वामी विवेकानंद की जयंती को राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस के रूप में मनाने का निर्णय लिया।
स्वामी विवेकानंद का जीवन परिचय
स्वामी विवेकानंद का जन्म 12 जनवरी 1863 को कोलकाता में हुआ। उनका बचपन का नाम नरेंद्रनाथ दत्त था। वे बचपन से ही तेजस्वी, बुद्धिमान और जिज्ञासु थे। उन्होंने रामकृष्ण परमहंस को अपना गुरु माना और उनके सान्निध्य में आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान प्राप्त किया।
